Last Wednesday I started my project at The Music Settlement.
Working in a preschool was a completely new experience for me. Obviously I had
numerous experiences with children but none of them really prepared me for my
Senior Project.
At school I had the chance to meet tons of children participating and engaging with them in class. Although they have similar needs, each kid has his own personality and way to interact with adults and his peers. Generally it has been very easy to establish relationships with them. ATTENTION is the thing they seem to need the most. They are willing to share their stories and their lives telling what they received from their grandparents or what they had done the day before. Connecting and playing with them will certainly help me to ask my essential question “How do children learn to build relationships? Does the environment that surrounds them from a young age affect them? In particular, how do creative elements like music and arts help them through this process?”
Through my project I get to experience a part of my youth that I had almost forgot. I have to admit that is tougher than what I expected but at the end of the day, it is worth it.
